The Minmi Roll of Honour has 78 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 63rd name inscribed is Private William Charles Brown.

Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Minmi Cemetery.

On the Monday afternoon of the 23rd August 1920, Private William Charles Brown, 30th Battalion (Reg No-3073), wheeler (Stockton Borehole Colliery, Teralba, N.S.W.), from Main Street (Purple Hill), Minmi, New South Wales and First Street, Boolaroo, N.S.W., (boarded with his brother Harold), was laid to rest at Minmi Cemetery, age 30 Years 3 Months. Left Hand Side, Section 05, Plot 008.

William died about 5.30 p.m. on the 21st August 1920 at Wallsend Hospital, N.S.W.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 17th May 1890 to Charles Edward, died 6.1.1935, Minmi, N.S.W., age 82, buried at Left Hand Side, Section 05, Plot 008, from Main Street (Purple Hill), Minmi, New South Wales and Church Street, Minmi, N.S.W. (1919), and Isabella Brown nee Hunter, died 13.7.1927, Minmi, N.S.W., age 69, mother of 4?, sleeping at Left Hand Side, Section 05, Plot 008, from Main Street (Purple Hill), Minmi, New South Wales and Church Street, Minmi, N.S.W. (1919).

William enlisted on the 23th May 1916 with the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, age 26 years, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.1.1917.

Transferred to 30th Battalion from 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion 11.7.1917.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 23.10.1917.

Admitted to hospital 16.6.1918 (pneumonia), 13.10.1918 (influenza).

Granted leave to England from 29.10.1918 to 14.11.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 5.7.1919.

William arrived home on the 20th August 1919, being discharged on the 5th October 1919.

Mr. Brown’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour. Name would be inscribed on the Minmi Lodge No.72 M.U.I.O.O.F. Roll of Honour, unveiled on the 26th July 1916, 19 names inscribed, whereabouts unknown.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Harold Edward Brown, born 18.11.1896, Minmi, New South Wales, single boiler fireman from First Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, enlisted 19.8.1916, Newcastle, N.S.W., 35th Battalion, Reg No-2540, unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 25th October 1916, RTA 4.5.1917, discharged medically unfit (asthma) 31.7.1917, died 23.1.1931, age 34, resting at Left Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 016.
