Biography contributed by Robert Wight

John Fraser Campbell, aged 23, enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914. He embarked overseas on 19 October 1914 and was involved in the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915, where he was wounded and then evacuated to Egypt. He was wounded for the second time on 7 August 1915 at Lone Pine, during the August Offensive, after which he was repatriated to Australia in October 1915.

After he recovered, he left Australia again on 3 July 1916 and arrived in England on 2 September 1916, where he spent the next 15 months in and out of several hospitals and training camps. He was also promoted to Corporal (Cpl) during this time.

He arrived in France on 6 December 1917 and finally re-joined the 8th Battalion on 11 December 1917. On 6 May 1918, having demonstrated excellent leadership and bravery during an earlier raid on a German trench near Ypres, Cpl Campbell was awarded the Military Medal.

On 9 August 1918, he was wounded for the third time during the 1st Division’s attack on the French village of Lihons, during the Battle of Amiens.

He was evacuated to hospital in England and then repatriated to Australia on 24 December 1918, where he was medically discharged from the AIF in Melbourne on 5 April 1919.
