Albert was the son of August Hienrich Gustave and Bertha Sophia Both [nee
Curdes]. He was attached to the 2nd Depot Battalion at Mitcham for the period
7 September to 1 November 1915, training as a Gunner. He was sent to France
on 23 March 1916, serving as a Driver. Albert transferred to the 6th Army in
France on 28 January 1917 as a Bombardier. He was hospitalised on several
occasions with bronchitis and influenza from 12 January to 8 July 1918, but
was able to rejoin his brigade on 28 February.
Albert was appointed acting Corporal on 1 March 1919. He returned to
Australia on the Nestor on 20 June and was discharged on 22 August
