Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of John LANAGAN and Alice nee HARVEY

Husband of Hilda LANAGAN nee CLIFFORD

The death occurred at Wembley Private Hospital on Saturday evening of Mr. Francis Ebenzer Lanagan, of Rupanyup, at the age of 57 years.  Deceased had been ailing for only a short time and his death came as a surprise to his many friends. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lanagan, he was born at Rupanyup and at the age of 33 years was married to  Miss Hilda Clifford, of Banyena, who, with one daughter Oliver Mary, and a son, Arthur George, survives him.  Two sons are deceased.

The late Mr. Lanagan was a prominent citizen of the rupanyup district, being a member of the Dunmunkle Shire, of which he was president last year.  He was a member of the vestry of the Rupanyup Church of England and was also a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge, being a Junior Warden at the time of his death.  He was a keen military man, having joined the 19th Aust. Light Horse Regiment in 1911, and when war broke out in 1914 he went abroad with the 4th Aust. Light Horse.  For bravery on active service he was awarded the D.C.M.   Following his discharge in 1919 he again joined the 19th Light Horse and rose to the rank of Captain.  In 1933 he transferred to the 1st Armoured Car Regiment in which he held the rank of Major, transferring to the 26th Machine Gun Regt. in 1940, attaining the rank of Lieut.-Colonel.  He later joined the 26th Armoured Regt. A.I.F. and following his discharge in 1942 took charge of the Rupanyup Air Training Corps.

The funeral took place at Rupanyup on Monday afternoon, after a service conducted by the Rev. Canon N.S. Fettell, assisted by Mr. Bishop of Rupanyup.  The church was crowded to the doors for the service.  At the Cemetery, members of R.S.L. formed a guard of honor and marched to the graveside where the Masonic service was read by Wor. Bro. G. Nelson, P.J.G.D. and the R.S.L. Service by Mr. A.G. Swan, at the conclusion of which the Last Post was sounded.
