One of four brothers who served abroad, whilst a fifth enlisted but did not embark from Australia. One of his brothers, No.290 2nd Lieutenant Arthur William Yates, A Company 22nd Infantry Battalion, died of wounds received at Pozieres, France on 7 August 1916, less than a week after Harold was killed.
