George Clifton CHITTENDEN was born on 21st June, 1895 at Hobbys Yards

His parents were James Edward CHITTENDEN and Edith Annie MELVILLE who married in 1894 in Blayney, NSW - he had two known sisters, Lillian & Edith

He had previously served with the Senior Cadets for 9 months before he enlisted on 25th February, 1916 at Bathurst - he was with J Coy, Bathurst Depot and left Australia with the 3rd reinforcements of the 45th Battalion on 22nd May, 1916- later he joined the ranks of the 45th Battalion on the 22nd September, 1916 in the Field.

George was Killed in Action at Delville Wood on 24th January, 1917

He was awarded the  British War Medal and the Victory Medals

His name is memorialised at the Australian War Memorial and on a Memorial plaque commemorating his service in WW1 at the Hobbys Yards Uniting Church
