Vernon was the third of five children and only son of George Henry Crole (born in Nelson New Zealand) and Jemima Emily Parke (born 1874 in Ballan, Victoria) George and Jemima married in 1893 in Leongathe, Victoria and raised their family in the Gippsland region where George was a Labourer and a Farmer.

Vernon was farming at Dumbalk, near Stoney Creek in Victoria when he enlisted in 1915 the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No: 3035) with 7th Reinforcements 24th Infantry Battalion and 8th Infantry Battalion. He volunteered in April 1916 for the Anzac Provost Corps (Royal Australian Corps of Military Police Memorial Page) and was again with the 8th Infantry Battalion at Polygon Wood when he was reported as MiA on 28 September 1918, and listed as KIA on 29 September 1918. The last letter his parents received from Vernon was dated 17 September 1918.

According to the Red Cross File, Vernon was buried south of Polygon Wood and east of Glencose Wood. 

Vernon's Uncle Frederick Charles Crole (Service No: 364) was KIA in 1917 in Belgium. Cousins Sydney Roland (Service No: 10332), Ernest George (Service No: 54867) also served in WWI,and Floyd Gregory (Service No: VX40718) served in WWII. Brother in Law William Raymond Bilson (Service No: 5973) also served in WWI.
