Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
67 years ago today, on the 15th August 1957, Corporal Herbert James Marshall, 5th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-2870), labourer from Canterbury, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. PRESBYTERIAN-A18. 38. Not married.
Born at Canterbury, New South Wales on the 15th October 1890 to Richard, died?, and Mary Agnes Marshall, died 2.8.1939, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 86, sleeping at GENERAL-29. 2, from the corner of Platt and Grove Street, Waratah, N.S.W. and 56 Valencia Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., Herb enlisted on the 30th June 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 30th September 1915.
Granted leave to England from 7.1.1918 to 21.1.1918 and 15.11.1918 to 1.12.1918.
Admitted to hospital 1.7.1918 (myalgia).
Commenced return to Australia 7.4.1919.
Herb arrived home on the 25th May 1919, being discharged on the 18th July 1919.
Mr. Marshall’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Herb’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
