Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Lipman Cohen was born anywhere between the years of 1898-1900 (1)(2). Lipman Cohen was one of the smartest in Tech, as he challenged many of those in his class, being 3rd in 1B’s class of 1913 (3). These grades mostly originated from his abilities in mathematics and engineering related skills (4), where he achieved some of the highest marks in his class for that year. After school Cohen was employed as a clerk (around where he lived in Woollahra) (7).Prior to his enlistment, Cohen was in Senior Cadets for four years (5)

On August the first in 1916, Cohen completed a medical check (8) to observe whether or not he was fit to be placed into a battalion and to be sent off to the warfronts. He was deemed fit and on the 21st of August 1916, Lipman Cohen enlisted into the Australian military, and only a couple days later on the 26th, he was appointed to the Dubbo Depot Battalion (9).

He trained at Dubbo until 24th of January 1917, when Cohen embarked from Sydney (Australia) on the HMAT Anchises A68 (10) toward Devonport. Once in the United Kingdom on the 27th of March (11), Cohen participated in activities such as ‘Home Service’ (12) in Hurdcott (UK), a task of which was used to keep order in Allied countries.

Later, Cohen joined the 2nd Division Signals Corps (part of the 54th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement) on the 13th of July 1917 (13), a unit specialising in field engineers, reminiscent of Cohen’s late skills reflected in school. The next day his title had changed from Private to Sapper (14). He trained with the Signal Corp until he was sent to the Western Front on the 14th of December 1917 (15). He was taken on strength 2nd Deivision Signal Battalion and served with them until he became ill with a fever in June 1918 and was sent to hospital. He was sent back to his unit 19th June 1918.

After the war ended Cohen took leave in England for a couple of weeks and then he assisted with the clean-up in France uintil May 1919 when he returned to England to prepare for repatriation back to Australia..

Cohen embarked for Australia (20) on the 7th of July 1919 and was discharged from the 2nd Division Signals Corps 22nd December 1919 (21). The knowledge of any kind of marriage or further children is unknown, only that from the information of electoral rolls told he was a sales agent (22) from 1930-1943. Cohen’s mother and father had died in the years of 1942 and 1946 respectively (23), as reported in death rolls in the newspapers.
