Eldest of two brothers who served in the RAAF in WWII, Leading Aircraftman Noel Alexander McCullagh (Service No:25650) enlisted at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane on 29 April 1941 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee W/T Operator, remustered as Telegraphist then as Wireless Operator Mechanic. In 1944 LAC McCullagh was attached to 104 Fighter Control Unit, and served with 1 Wireless Control Unit Port Moresby, 6 Wireless Unit Hollandia and Leyte in the Philippines. In 1945 LAC McCullagh was attached to Brisbane Medical Unit (BMU) and RAAF Command Brisbane. At Discharge on 3 May 1946, LAC McCullagh was attached to 3 Aircraft Depot.
Noel was born in Jundah, QLD in 1921, second of four children of Alexander John McCullagh (b1889 in Windorah, QLD) and Hilda Irene McPhellamy (b1898 in Windorah, QLD). Alexander and Hilda married in 1919 in Windorah - Alexander was a Labourer on Galway Downs Station via Windorah, where they lived until the 1920s. Alexander and Hilda then settled at Currevera Station via Windorah - Alexander was a Grazier, a Justice of the Peace and served on the Barcoo Shire Council.
Noel joined the Postmaster General's Department as a Telegraph Messenger on leaving school, and was a Postman in Brisbane in 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1948 in Surat, Noel married Marjorie Irene Simpson (b1925 in Surat, QLD), and the couple lived in Surat where Noel worked as a Station Hand and from the 1950s in Roma as Manager of Bymount, and as a Grazier. Noel died in 1999 and Marjorie in 2013.
