Son of Reuben Underwood and Margaret Underwood nee Edwards of Mount Gambier, SA

Husband of Gertrude Underwood nee Frost of Thomas Street, Unley, SA. Reuben and Gertrude married in Beasconsfield, WA during 1898

16 February 1916 - Enlisted at Adelaide, SA with the 43rd Battalion. Rank - Private.

13 January 1917 - promoted to Lance Corporal.

4 October 1917 - wounded at Third Ypres. Wounds to the wrist and shoulder. On 19 October 1917 he embarked HS Ville de Liege for England.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 November 1918 aboard HT Haiku disembarking at Melbourne on 29 December 1918 for  onward travel to Adelaide, SA

13 March 1919 - discharged at Adelaide as medically unfit due to sesnility and overage.
