Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, have I been forgotten?

60 years ago today, on the 12th September 1961, Private Lance Theodore McGarity, 4th Battalion (Reg No-4554), labourer from Byrock, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 3-84. 74.

Born at Narromine, New South Wales on the 26th May 1889 to Joseph Justin and Annie J McGarity; husband of Selina Jane McGarity nee Wright (married 1920, Marrickville, N.S.W., died 1959, CATHOLIC 3-81. 67., sleeping in an unmarked grave), Lance enlisted August 1915 at Dubbo, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 8.9.1916 (influenza), 4.4.1917 (influenza), 22.4.1917 (trench fever).

Wounded in action - 11.9.1918 (gas), Lance returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 3rd August 1919.

Mr. McGarity’s name has been inscribed on the Bourke & District War Memorial (photo) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I located Lance resting in an unmarked grave, now forgotten, so April 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Mr. McGarity.

Lest We Forget.
