66 years ago today, on the 20th February 1959, Private Evan Ivor Ashton, referred to as Ivor, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-2272), labourer (Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops), from 27 Reay Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 8 Sparke Lane, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 156 Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., father of two (Clare and Donald), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. ANGLICAN 3-203. 27.
Born at Newtown, (Hamilton) New South Wales on the 2nd March 1898 to Evan Biddle, died 15.9.1944, Wyong, N.S.W., age?, buried at BAPTIST-H SE. 14, from Boreas Road, Hamilton North, (Newtown) New South Wales and 36 De Vitre Street, Lambton, N.S.W., and Berthiah (Bertha, Berthah, Berthea, Bithiah) Ashton nee Middleton, died 14.9.1924, Lambton, N.S.W., age 63, sleeping at BAPTIST-H SE. 14, mother of 8, from Boreas Road, Hamilton North, (Newtown) New South Wales and 36 De Vitre Street, Lambton, N.S.W.; husband of Alma Katherine Ashton nee Winsor, married 1922, Wickham, N.S.W., died 17.9.1947, Mater Hospital, Waratah, N.S.W., age 44, sleeping at CATHOLIC 2-57. 91, from 156 Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., Ivor enlisted on the 1st May 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
36th Battalion officially disbanded 30.4.1918.
Transferred to 33rd Battalion 30.4.1918.
Wounded in action - 22.8.1918 (GSW right leg, severe).
Amputation of right thigh.
Invalided to England 5.9.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 16.3.1919.
Ivor arrived home invalided on the 15th May 1919, not being discharged medically unfit until the 22nd May 1920.
Mr. Ashton’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Lambton/New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Ivor’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
