James was born in Gympie, QLD and enlisted in Brisbane, QLD with 1st Divisional Light Trench Mortar on 16 September 1915. He served as a Trooper, Gunner and Driver in Cairo, Alexandria, and France (Etaples, Boulogne and Marseilles) and Belgium. After his Discharge, James worked as a Sugar Chemist in Mackay, North Queensland

James's parents were Michael Pollard and Ellen Mary Hayes. James attended North Pine State School. He enlisted at Brisbane on 16 September 1915 and joined the 13th Reinforcements, 3rd Field Artillery. His unit embarked from Sydney, N.S.W., on board HMAT Berrima A35 on 17 December, 1915. He returned to Australia and died aged 79.
