"Captain George Everett James, son of Mr. John James, of Chisholm-street, Ballarat North, died of wounds in France on the 24th July, 1916.
He was born at Ballarat in 1890; he attended the Melbourne High School in 1905-6; and was appointed junior teacher at School 1998 Ballarat East, in 1907. He was afterwards transferred as assistant to School 1459, Shepparton.
He entered the Teachers College in 1911, and left it at the end of 1912 to take up the position of head teacher at School 797, Mount Rowan. He was assistant at the Bendigo High School in 1913 and again took up his duties at Mount Rowan, whence he enlisted.
He left Australia as a member of the 2nd Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion. He was present at the Landing at Gallipoli, was wounded, but remained on the Peninsula till the evacuation.
Captain James had an excellent record as a teacher. His work was at all times characterized by skill and energy."
