Biography contributed by John Oakes

Clarence Roy MARK was born on 4th July 1893 at Greenough (near Geraldton) in Western Australia.

On 13th June 1913 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a cleaner (casual) in the Locomotive Branch at Junee. His position was made permanent on 21st January 1914 and on 4th July 1914 he received a large pay rise for his 21st birthday. On 15th August 1914 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 19th August 1914 with the rank of Private (Service Number 321) and was allocated to the 4th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his mother, Mrs Mary Ann Bell, who was still living at Greenough, WA, as his next of kin (she later moved to West Perth).

With the 4th Infantry Battalion, he embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A14 ‘Euripides’ at Sydney on 20th October 1914 and the Battalion arrived in Egypt on 2nd December 1915. He embarked at Alexandria for the Gallipoli Campaign on 5th April 1915.

The 4th Infantry Battalion took part in the Anzac landings on 25th April 1915 as part of the second and third waves. It then took part in the defence of the beachhead.

On 12th May 1915, during this operation, Clarence was killed in action.

His military record indicates that he was buried in Wire Gully, but as the site of his grave could not be identified subsequently, he is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. His place of association is Greenough, Western Australia.

After his death his mother, who had moved to West Perth by then, was awarded a pension of £52 per annum granted from 19th June 1915.
