Frederick was born in Bulphan, Essex, his birth being registered in Orsett a few miles south of the village.

He was 27 and a son of John and Emma Graves, of Manor Cottages, Bulphan, Romford, Essex, England. His brother Private James Graves, aged 36, also fell. He died 25th September 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd Bn. Highland Light Infantry and having no known grave, is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
In the United Kingdom, the brothers are remembered on the war memorial which stands in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Bulphan.
