2 Oct 1918: | Honoured Military Medal, Breaching the Hindenburg Line - Cambrai / St Quentin Canal, For Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on the HINDENBURG LINE, South of VENDHULLE, on the 29th September 1918. Owing to the heavy enemy Artillery and machine gun fire the task of laying and maintaining telephone communications was rendered almost impossible, and it was only due to Gunner McKEON's determination, grit and utter disregard to personal danger that communications were effectively maintained, thus enabling the Battery to deal with enemy movement during the Battle. signed E G Sinclair Maclagan, Major-General, Commanding 4th Australian Division. | |
5 Apr 2018: | Wounded 11th Field Artillery Brigade , Dernancourt/Ancre, Near Albert. "At 9 o'clock Lt Butters of the 41st Battery was wounded and Capt Martin while attempting to dress the wound was hit by a shell which killed them both". (C.E.W. Bean, Official War History). Gunner McKeon was with them but was only slightly wounded. Others nearby were killed, including Rankin of Bundaberg and Vic Webster (Brisbane). |
