Dundee paid a high price for her war efforts. By the armistice, over 4,000 men and several women had made the ultimate sacrifice. Their names are recorded in the city’s Roll of Honour.
John was the brother of Trimmer James Thorpe, H.MS. Stephen Furness, Mercantile Marine Reserve, who was killed in action 13.12.1917 when his ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German Submarine.
Both men are remembered on a family Gravemarker in Dundee’s Eastern Cemetery with the surname of “THOBE” although all official records record them as “THORPE”
