Son of John O'Neal and Lucy O'Neal of Argyle Street, North Hobart, Tasmania.
Brother of John Tasman Andrew O'Neal who was killed in action on 26 January 1917 while serving with the 52nd Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial.
Commenced return to Australia on 13 February 1917 aboard H T Ulysses disembarking on 12 April 1917
