John Lawrence Fitzgerald was the son of David and Margaret Fitzgerald, of Bunyip, Victoria. His brother, 3312 L/Cpl. Daniel Fitzgerald, also of the 59th Battalion AIF, who was wounded during the same battle, recovered, and later in the war died of wounds on 5 October 1917, aged 24. Another brother, 37563 Driver David William Fitzgerald, served with the 7th Field Artillery and returned to Australia in 1919.
