John Lawrence Fitzgerald was the son of David and Margaret Fitzgerald, of Bunyip, Victoria. His brother 3312 Lce. Cpl. Daniel Fitzgerald also of the 59th Battalion AIF, who was wounded during the same battle, recovered, and later in the war died of wounds on 5 October 1917, aged 24. Another brother, 37563 Driver David William Fitzgerald served with the 7th Field Artillery and returned to Australia during 1919.
