Harry J Thomson was born on 13 August 1896, the youngest of 12 children born to Henry Thomson and Sarah Harriet Grist of Peel (near Bathurst) NSW.  Harry attended Peel National School with his brothers and sisters and was then apprenticed as a carpenter.   He enlisted in May 1915 at the age of 18, and was allotted to the 4th Battalion, 6th reinforcements.  Two weeks later, the recruits embarked on A 63 HMAT Karoola at Sydney. The 155 men of the 6th reinforcements to the 4th Battalion embarked on HMAT A63 “Karoola” at Sydney on 16th June 1915. 

By 4 August 1915, Harry was with his unit on Gallipoli. The 4th Battalion took part in the attack at Lone Pine and Harry was killed between 6 and 9 August 1915, within 3 months of enlisting.
