Biography contributed by Kathleen Bambridge

General Birwood presented his Meritorios Service Medal on 6 March 1920.

Meritorious Service Medal

'Sergeant Hughes has been on orderly room duties both as clerk and as orderly room sergeant with Headquarters Brigade for a period of over three years. During the whole of that period he has shown the utmost attention and devotion to duty. He has worked assiduously and with cheerfulness and on all occasions been unsparing to himself in obtaining the best and most accurate results. On many occasions during tour of duty in the line he has had of necessity to work long hours under most adverse and trying physical conditions. On numerous occasions he has worked under heavy and continuous shell fire, but never once has he failed to carry out his duties in a most thorough, reliable and satisfactory manner.'
