Son of Edwin and Phoebe Gilbert, of 4, Hindley St., Adelaide, South Australia.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEVOTED SON & BROTHER DUTY NOBLY DONE

Private J. G. L. GILBERT, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Gilbert, of No. 4, Hindley-street west, died of wounds on November 12 in Egypt He was born in Adelaide in 1899, and was educated at the Observation School. He was a bright lad, and of a cheerful disposition. He was employed on Mr. Walter Duncan's Gum Creek station when he enlisted.

Letter dated 25th Febuary 1918

Dear Sir,  With reference to the report of the regrettable loss of your son, the late No. 3358 Private J.G.L. Gilbert, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, I am now in receipt of advice which shows that he died at 74th Casualty Clearing Station, Palestine, Turkey, on 12/11/17, of wounds(gunshot wounds left thigh and gas gangrene) received in action, and was buried at Deir-el-Belah, Palestine, grave No. 397, Chaplain C.N.Swain officiating.  Major Officer/ i/c Base Records.
