IN MEMORY OF THE DEARLY LOVED SON OF MR. & MRS. J. HILL OF BRISBANE
Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J. Hill, School road, Yeronga, that their eldest son, Lieutenant Samuel John Hill, M.M., was killed in action on the 18th September. Lieutenant Hill left here as a private in the 6th reinforcements of the 16th Battalion, in June, 1915, and was through the August fighting in Gallipoli in that year. When in Egypt, he was transferred to the 47th Battalion, which was then formed, and fought with that battalion in all its battles in France and Belgium. At Messines, he was awarded the Military Medal and promoted to 2nd-Lieutenant— afterwards being promoted lieutenant. Thus all his honours were gained in the field. When the 47th battalion was broken up for want of reinforcements, he was again transferred to the 45th, in which battalion he was serving when killed. This brave young soldier would have attained his 21st birthday on the 28th October.
