Biography contributed by John Oakes

Sidney Fisher JONES (Service Number 1970) was born on 14th May 1889 at South Brisbane. He worked for the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a linesman’s labourer with the Electric Tramways from 20th May 1913. In January 1915 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces. He enlisted at Liverpool on 19th January. Being unmarried he gave his father, living at Woolloongabba (Brisbane suburb) as his next of kin.

He left Australia aboard HMAT ‘Kyarra’ as part of the 5th Reinforcements to the 4th Battalion on 13th April 1915. After a short time in Egypt, he joined the Battalion on Gallipoli on 17th June 1915.

He was killed on Gallipoli between 1st and 9th August 1915 at the Battle of Lone Pine. He had been promoted to Corporal a week earlier.

As is common for deaths occurring during those chaotic days, no body was recovered. Therefore Jones has no known grave. He is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli.

While Jones’ father was still alive, he was in his 70th year and unable to work. A pension of £52 per annum was paid to Jones’ mother.
