Cyril was the youngest of three children of Campbell Prout (born 1864 in Renfrew, Scotland) and Margaret (Annie) Harris (born 1860 in Colchester, Essex). Campbell was a Printer and Bookbinder when he married Annie in 1887 in Colchester, Essex, and they raised their family in London.

Cyril was a Clerk when he left England in May 1913, arriving in Sydney, NSW on board the Arctic. He settled at Hurstville in Sydney and was a Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. He was initially a Private (Service No:6113) and was a Corporal with 24th Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in 1919. Cyril was WiA on two occasions in France - Gassed and GSW to his face. In WWII Cyril enlisted with the ACMF and served as a Private (Service No:N74141 with 2 Garrison Battalion between June and November in 1940.

In 1923 Cyril was working as a Ledger Keeper in Bankstown, Sydney, NSW when he married Doris Ann Rogers (born 1890 in Epsom, Surrey). Doris immigrated in 1911 with her parents, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Zealandic. Cyril and Doris lived in Parkes, NSW where Cyril worked as a Verger and Clerk before returning to Sydney, where Cyril worked as an Agriculturalist in 1937 at the Church of England Boys' Home in Parramatta. 

Cyril tried his hand as a Poultry Farmer in 1940, and he and Doris divorced that year - both remarried. In 1941 at Muswellbrook, NSW Cyril married Joyce May Smith (born 1907 at Raymond Terrace in NSW). Cyril and Joyce lived in Armidale, NSW, where in 1943 Cyril was an Instructor at St John's Hostel, and in 1949 moved to Lyne, NSW. Cyril worked in Lyne as a Market Gardener and Farmer and died in 1976. Joyce died in 1997.
