Son of Edward O'Malley and Isabel Mary O'Malley nee Billinh of Waratah, Tasmania.

On 6 May 1919 John married Gertrude Steele in the Church of St. Gabriels, Pimlico, London, England. Curate W. H. Norman officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 22 December 1919 aboard HT Themistocles disembarking on 5 February 1920 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart.
