Served bravely and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

56 years ago today, on the 29th November 1967, Corporal Albert Whittaker (M.M.), 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-3983), shunter or railway guard from 10 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales and 6 Catherine Street, Waratah West, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 77. METHODIST 4-21. 35.

Born at Shepton Mallet, Somerset, United Kingdom about 1890 to John and Ellen Whittaker; husband of Edith Hilda Maud Whittaker nee Davies (married 4.6.1919 at Ty-Newydd Road, Barry, United Kingdom, died 9.12.1979, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 83, sleeping here), Albert enlisted on the 8th December 1914 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 10th April 1915.

Admitted to hospital 20.6.1916 (influenza).

Proceeded on leave to England from 7.9.1917 to 19.9.1917.

Wounded in action - 16.10.1917 (gassed, severe, 1st Battle of Passchendaele), 3.10.1918 (gassed, Joncourt, Northern France).

Transferred to England 15.12.1918.

Awarded Military Medal 6.1.1919, Villers-Bretonneux.
Albert returned home with wife Edith on the 19th September 1919, being discharged on the 29th November 1919.

Mr. Whittaker’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
