Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Harold Unwin Hillyar was taken on strength of the 34th Battalion in France during late November 1916. He was killed in action only months later, and in service file it states he was buried on the outskirts of Cachy, on the road to Villers-Bretonneux, which is only 3.5 kilometres away. His grave was subsequently lost.
His younger brother, 2152 Cpl. Alexander Unwin Hillyar 53rd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Fromelles 19 July 1916, aged 20.
Their parents were Henry Unwin and Lydia Jane (Lily) Unwin of Neutral Bay, Sydney, NSW. The father worked or owned the Union Marine Insurance Company and wrote many letters to the AIF regarding his sons, always stressing replies be sent to his company address and not his home address in order that is his wife would not receive any distressing news.
