Private John Mayberry Winnett (Service No:3225) enlisted in the AIF on 26 October 1916 and embarked from Fremantle with 8th Reinforcements 46th Infantry Battalion on 29 December 1916 on board HMAT Persic A34. Private Winnett was attached to 45th Infantry Battalion when he was WiA in France on 5 April 1918 - GSW to elbow and hip. He embarked on 15 February 1919 for Adelaide on board HT Orca and was Discharged on 17 June 1919.
Born in Clunes Victoria in 1892, John was the third of six children of James Joseph Winnett (b1859 in Clunes, Victoria) and Margaret Emma Mayberry (b1860 in Maryborough, Victoria). James (a Labourer) and Margaret married in 1886 at Long Gully nr Bendigo, Victoria and lived in Clunes Victoria, Alma NSW and Semaphore South Australia before settling in Fremantle WA in the late 1890s. James worked in Ravensthorpe WA as a Smelterer and Margaret spent time living between Fremantle and Ravensthorpe.
John was working as a Clerk in Fremantle WA when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1916 and in December married Sarah (Sadie) Marian Hicks (b1895 in Fremantle WA. John and Sadie lived in Fremantle and Perth where they raised their family and John worked as a Clerk. Following his service in the ACMF in WWII (Staff Sergeant; Service Nos:W18357/W17259), John and Sadie settled in Albany WA where John was Assistant Town Clerk. John died in 1961 and Sadie in 1968.
