Served with the Militia's Royal Australian Engineers for 5 years with the rank of Corporal

Served with the 5th Militia Battalion prior to enlisting with the Royal Australian Engineers in 1909.  He was posted to Georges Heights, Mosman, NSW at the time of his enlistment in the AIF on 24 November 1914.
