Son of Ewen and Eliza MacKinnon, 'The Gables', Ballina, New South Wales

Educated at Ballina Public School. At 13 won a Bursary to Sydney High School. Passed senior university exam with Honours. Put in 2 years practical work at Woolwich Dock attending Balmain and Sydney Technical College at night from which he won a Scholarship. Each year won Peter Nieve Russell Scholarship for engineering. Gained his Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. Still on a Scholarship when he enlisted.
