Biography contributed by John Oakes

George JONES was born at Camperdown about March 1893. He worked at a railway porter.

He was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 14th August 1915.

George Jones, (Service Number 3803A) enlisted at Holdsworthy on 14th August 1915. He gave his ‘trade of calling’ as ‘Railway Porter’. He gave his father living in Fivedock as his next of kin.

Before embarkation from Australia, Jones married Hanna and the next of kin entry is changed to her name.

He left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Medic’ on 30th December 1915. Initially he was allocated as part of the 12th Reinforcement to the 4th Battalion, but once in Egypt he was transferred to the 1st Battalion at Serapeum on 17th March 1916.  Jones career with the 1st Battalion was just two days until he was again transferred to the 13th Battalion. A period of hospitalisation with illness ensued in April and he embarked at Alexandria for France in June, passing through Marseilles a week later.

Before the end of the month he was disciplined for being Absent Without Leave. He received a punishment of seven days confined to barracks and the forfeiture of a day’s pay. This was followed immediately by another hospitalisation, thias time for an ingrown toenail. He returned to his unit on 8th July, only to be hospitalised again, for an unspecified ailment a week later.

On 7th August 1916 he was wounded with a gunshot to his right arm and wrist. This was serious enough to require evacuation to England. It was October before he had recovered, and, after furlough, returned to France in early December.

He was killed in action on 11th April 1917. He has no known grave. He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

George and Hannah Jones had a child, Roma Mary Jane. In July 1917, when a pension was granted to the infant, she and Hannah were living with a Mrs Correy of Fivedock.

There was dispute between Jones’ wife and mother as to the possession of his personal effects. They were wrongly delivered to Hannah but as the Will gave them to his Mother Mary Ann, the military demanded their return. The items in question were a pipe, a shaving brush and a testament.

At some time before 1923, Hannah Jones re-married.
