Richard was born at Mason Hill in Laverton, Western Australia in 1885, only child of Pharoah Richard Strange (b1852 in York, Western Australia) and Frances Wells (b1862 in Perth, Western Australia). Pharoah was a Farm Hand and Farmer in York, Beverley and Boyadine via Darkan.

Richard was a Farmer with his father at Boyadine via Darkan, and in 1911 in Darkan married Ella Bessie Symonds (b1890 in Albany, Western Australia). Richard and Ella lived in Boyadine, and in 1915 Richard was a Timber Hewer in Marradong via Boddington when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Richard and Ella settled in the Boddington district, where they raised their family and Richard was a Timber Hewer in Worsley in the 1920s and a Farmer in Boddington from the late 1920s.
