He was 20 and the son of Frank Broomfield Rathbone. and Isabella Rathbone, [nee Rigaud] of Granton, Tasmania.

His brother, Private Hubert Rigaud Rathbone, aged 22, also fell and rests in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.He served with the 12th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F., Service Number 2275 and died 10/10/1915
