69 years ago today, on the 11th January 1955, Private Thomas Alfred Linter, 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-2088), boilermaker from Club House Hotel, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. BAPTIST-J NE. 36.

Born at Rockhampton, Queensland about March 1892 to Charles Hubert and Anastasia Linter of Yippoon, Queensland; husband of Emma May Linter nee Dibben (married at The Register Office, St. Pancras, London, 22.2.1919, died 28.6.1968, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 73, sleeping here), Tom enlisted on the 19th August 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 16th February 1916.
Admitted to hospital 21.7.1916 (sprained ankle), 7.11.1916 (laryngitis), 22.12.1916 (mumps), 18.9.1918 (influenza).

Granted leave to England 16.8.1917 to 31.8.1917.
Wounded in action - 20.9.1917 (SW right arm, SW or GSW head).

Granted leave to England and France from 21.1.1919 to 6.2.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 12.7.1919.

Tom arrived home on the 9th September 1919 with wife Emma & one child, being discharged on the 1st November 1919.

Mr. Linter’s name has been inscribed on the Morison & Bearby Limited Roll of Honour, Newcastle Federated Society of Boilermakers Roll of Honour, Newcastle Federated Society of Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Tom’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 9/1/1955.
