Served bravely during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
76 years ago today, on the 30th December 1946, Gunner Bernard McQuade (M.M.), 14th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (114th Australian Howitzer Battery, Reg No-3606), labourer from 81 Hordern Street, Newtown, New South Wales and "Heather", 4 Harrison Street, Smedmore, N.S.W. and 127 Dawson Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. CATHOLIC 2-40. 28.
No funeral or death notice located.
Born at Lancashire, England about 1890 to Bernard and Mary McQuade of 4 Harrison Street, Smedmore, N.S.W.; husband of Eileen Daphne McQuade nee White (married 1930, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1982, 36 years a widow, sleeping here), Bernard enlisted on the 23rd August 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Warwick Farm Depot, N.S.W.
Failed to embark.
Reenlisted-18.10.1915, (4th Battalion) Troopship "Port Lincoln", Victoria.
Wounded in action - 20.8.1917 (GSW chest and left arm, severe).
Awarded Military Medal 28.9.1917.
Bernard returned home on the 12th February 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 20th May 1918.
Mr. McQuade’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1).
I have placed poppies at Bernard’s gravesite in remembrance of his brave service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
