As his company moved through the Red Line he rushed well out in front and from a shell hole brought accurate fire on an enemy machine gun keeping it quite until the company was down the slope. In the bombing attack in the evening he was first bayonet man and moving well up ahead of his party did such excellent work with his bayonet that the enemy bombing party fled in panic. He personally accounted for five of the enemy with the bayonet and his rapid movement and drastic methods cleared the way appreciably for the party behind.
