Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

65 years ago today, on the 9th July 1958, Gunner William John Harrison, 9th Australian Medium Trench Mortar Battery (Reg No-183), labourer from 23 William Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-37. 76.

Born at Tighes Hill, New South Wales on the 7th October 1897 to William and Mary Agnes Harrison; husband of Margaret Harrison nee? (married?, died 9.11.1960, age 61, sleeping here), William enlisted on the 15th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 9.12.1916 (synovitis to knee), 17.4.1918 (not stated).

Leave to England from 24.7.1917 to 4.8.1917.

Wounded in action - 18.5.1918 (GSW left forearm).

Invalided to England 3.6.1918.

William was invalided home on the 1st January 1919, not being discharged until the 12th December 1919.

Mr. Harrison’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll or the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
