William WHITE was born on 5th November, 1889 in Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

His parents were Michael WHITE and Maria HEMER

He was living in the Peoples Palace in Pitt St Sydney when he first enlisted on 4th October, 1915 and was later rejected due to eyesight problems and then re-enlisted in Rutherford, NSW on 14th April, 1916 and re-attested - his service was later confirmed as having started in 1915 & taken into account

William embarked on 1st May, 1916 with the 9th Machine Gun Company, 9th Infantry Brigade on the ship HMAS Benalla

He was taken on strength of 9th Machine Gun Company from Cooking School on 28th October, 1916 in Weymouth, England. On 9th December, 1916 he was injured with burns to his hands and sent to the hospital in the field.  Subsequenty he was given leave to England and rejoined his unit at Le Havre

He returned to Australia on the HT Ypiringa on 15th November, 1919 and arrived back on 9th January, 1920 - he was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal & a Medallion for War Effort

He married Ethel Elizabeth INCE on 4th January, 1922 in Gloucester, NSW and had two children, Harold William & Beryl May.

William died from a ruptured aorta at Woy Woy on 30th August, 1976 and is buried in Point Clare Cemetery near Gosford, NSW
