Lt William Niven fought with Trooper Potts in Gallipoli and died in the same advance that led to Trooper Potts' VC.  Lt Niven was killed in action at Gallipoli on 21st August 1915.  Lt Niven is believed to be buried in Green Hill Cemetery.

Lt Niven was the father of actor James David Graham Niven was born in 1910. David Niven,s Grandfather also called William served in the 1st Battalion 24th Regiment of Foot and was killed at the Battle of Isandlwana during Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. David Niven himself before becoming an actor went to Sandhurst and and became a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army. (From Joy Yardley)
