Family
Joseph Hutcheson Bryson was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the first of ten children.
His parents were Thomas Bryson and Elizabeth McCaffrey (nee Robertson). Elizabeth died on 12th Feb 1911 aged forty years. Thomas Snr then emigrated to Australia bringing with him all ten children.
Joseph 21, John 20, Thomas 18, Elizabeth ‘Bessie' 17, Agnes 14, Alexander 13, Alice ‘Annie’ 8, Helen ‘Nellie’ 6, Andrew 5 and Jane ‘Jeannie’ 2.
They sailed from London on 21st August 1911 aboard the S.S.Torilla and docked in Brisbane on 10th October 1911. The family settled in the Brisbane suburb of Wilston and remained there for many decades.
Thomas Bryson Snr (widowed in Scotland in 1911) was re-married in Brisbane on 5th Sept 1920 to Isabella Morrison McCorkindale. The couple had one child, Isabella McCorkindale Bryson. Thomas Snr died in Brisbane on 1 July 1948 aged 78 years and his second wife passed away on 4th January 1961.
Lieut Joseph Hutcheson Bryson – WWI – Western Front
On 18th Aug 1915 Joseph enlisted in the AIF, was assigned to 9th Battalion 3rd Division and served on the Western Front, mostly in the Ypres Salient (Flanders) but also in France. He was appt Lance Corporal on 25.01.1917, 2nd Lieut on 03.08.1917 and promoted to Lieutenant in France on 01.12.1917.
On 4th Nov 1917, he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the left thigh at Defy Crossing (near where Tyne Cot Cemetery now is) whilst defending key position near Zonnebeke (Ypres). He was transferred to the CCS, then to Class B duties at Le Havre. He recovered quickly and rejoined the 9th Btn in the Field in France on 20th Dec 1917.
On 7th March 1918, he was gassed near Hollebeke, Ypres, Flanders. The bombing and gassing was severe for three hours and traces of gas remained all night. He was admitted to the 1st Aust Field Ambulance then transferred to No 2 A.C.C.S at Trois Arbres near Bailleul. He died from gas poisoning at 5:45pm on 16th March 1918 and is buried in Outtersteene Cemetery at Bailleul Plot II.A.48, 16km south west of Ypres.
On 13th Sept 1915, his younger brother, Thomas Jnr (12945), enlisted in the AIF and was assigned to the Aust Medical Corp 3rd Sanitation Section and served on the Western Front, mostly with No. 2 A.C.C.S. At the end of the war, Thomas departed aboard the Hospital Ship SS Ormonde on 16th June 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 4th August 1919.
Their cousin, James McAusland Bryson (31855) of the Cameronians Scottish Rifles 'A' Coy 10th Battalion, also served on the Western Front and was killed in action in the Ypres Salient on 22nd June 1917. He is buried in the Bleuet Farm Cemetery at West-Vlaanderen Belgium, 3km north west of Ypres.

His parents were Thomas BRYSON & Elizabeth McCAFFREY (nee ROBERTSON) - his Mother Elizabeth died in 1911 and his Father Thomas brought some of the family to Brisbane on the ship Torilla arriving on 10th October, 1911
Josephs brother Thomas BRYSON (SN12945) also served in WW1 and returned to Australia in 1919
