Walter Allan Tyler
9th Light Horse Regiment, 14th Reinforcement
Service Number – 2025B
Walter Allan was born in Conyton [now known as Clayton] in Adelaide in July, 1894. His mother was Susan Tyler. They lived in Adelaide. He wasn’t married before the war.
His height was five feet four inches and hair colour was reddish-brown. It was recorded that he was of the Baptist religion. Before World War 1, Walter Allan was working as a cleaner at the railway station in Adelaide. He was prepared to undergo inoculation against smallpox and enteric fever.
On 8/11/15 Tyler Walter Allan enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia, and sailed on the HMAT Warilda on 10/2/16 to go to World War 1. He was twenty-one years of age. He joined the troops in Alexandria, Egypt.
During his first year of enlistment, he was deployed with the 9th Light Horse and 14th Reinforcement. He was not wounded or killed during his time at war but he was in and out of hospital a few times because of an unknown fever.
Walter Allan's record shows that the 1914/1915 Star has N.E. written underneath - meaning he was not eligible for a medal because he had not served overseas during 1914/1915. He also received a British War Medal and the Victory Medal, which were given to all who served overseas during the Great War.
He left England to return to Australia on the ship named Shropshire in 1/4/19.

Walter Allan Tyler - My Grandfather
I believe there is a typographical error in the biography above. Walter Allan Tyler was born in Corryton, not Conyton. The first page mentions he was born in Margill, which makes sense, as Corryton (now Kensington Gardens) is very close to Margill. Conyton, however, is located 274 kilometers to the north.
While it is possible that he could have been born in Conyton, it seems more likely that he was born in Corryton, given that his brother, Harold, who also served, was born in Kensington Gardens (formerly Corryton), South Australia. It’s possible that the original biography was based on a handwritten record, and the term "Corryton" could have been misinterpreted as "Conyton" due to handwriting.
Also his mother was from Knightsbridge which is now called Hazelwood Park.
