His parents were Edward and Rose Anna Whittle of Penguin, Tasmania. His father Edward enlisted at over 50 years of age and served with the Australian Remount Unit in Egypt. His brother 3194 Lance Corporal Charles George Whittle, 52nd Battalion AIF, was awarded the Military Medal and returned to Australia wounded in 1917.
