William Burgess spent most of his life farming at Muckleford near Castlemaine in Victoria, and had recently moved to Meckering in Western Australia when he enlisted. His brother 1712 Private Nathaniel Strafford Burgess 13th Battalion AIF also died at of wounds at Gallipoli on the 5 November 1915.
