His older brother, 745 Trooper Herbert Edward Samuels, 2nd Australian Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron, had been killed in action 9 August 1916, aged 35. Another brother, Frederick Charles Samuels served with the Artillery in France and returned to Australia in 1919.

They were the sons of Henry Robert Samuels and Jane Evans Samuels of Trangie, New South Wales.

Alexander 'Alec' Britton's was reported as missing in action 11 April 1917. His remains were found during 1921 and buried in the Queant Road Cemetery near Bullecourt.
