Biography contributed by John Oakes

Charles Thomas HORAN (Service Number 941) was born at Bowral on 2nd November 1891.  He finished his education at Tumut.

He joined the NSW Government Railways in November 1908 as a cleaner (first step on the career path of an engineman) at the Wellington locomotive depot. He had  previously been employed casually.  In March 1910 he was transferred to Harden depot. In November 1912 he was promoted to fireman at Junee depot.  He fired the Melbourne Express. He had qualified for engine driver, at the time he enlisted in the AIF at Kensington in August 1914.

Allotted to the 3rd Battalion, he was embarked from Egypt for Gallipoli on 5th April 1915.

He was wounded by a bullet in the hand on 9th May while gathering in damaged rifles along the trenches. He was evacuated to hospital in Cairo.  After 2 months there he re-embarked for Gallipoli and re-joined his unit there on 9th July.

He was killed in action between 7th and 12th August 1915 and buried at Lone Pine.  His services were mentioned (although not detailed) in Sir Ian Hamilton’s dispatches (Commonwealth of Aust Gazette No. 44, 6 April 1916).

After the war his remains were exhumed and re-interred in Lone Pine Cemetery, ½ mile SE of Anzac Cove. His identity disc, by which his remains were identified, was sent to his father.

A war pension was granted to his mother.
