Gunner Sydney James Withnell (Service No:56421) enlisted in the AIF on 11 April 1918 and was a Private attached to 1 to 3 (WA and Tas) Reinforcements on 29 July 1918 when he embarked with his Unit from Albany, WA for London on board HMAT A74 Marathon. Private Withnell served with 11th Battalion in France, was hospitalised with Measles, and embarked from England for Fremantle WA on board HT City of Exeter on 12 July 1919. Gunner Withnell was atatched to 6th Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 1 September 1919. Brother Algy was KiA in WWI, and Alick served in WWII, as did Sydney's son Maitland.
Sydney was born at Clackline via Northam, WA in 1898, eldest of four children of Robert (Harding) Dewitt Withnell (b1864 at Nicol Bay in Roebourne, WA) and Daisy Ethel Stanbridge (b1870 in Brisbane, QLD). Harding (a Squatter) and Daisy married in 1896 in Roebourne, and lived at Clackline via Northam, where Harding was a Station Manager, before moving to Marradong via Boddington, where he was a Farmer and Fruit Grower. In the early 1920s Harding and Daisy lived in Mundijong, where Harding was a Fruit Grower, moving to Northam in the early 1930s, where he was a Poultry Farmer before retiring to Perth in the mid 1930s.
Sydney was a Station Hand in 1918 when he enlisted in the AIF and, following his Discharge, was a Farmer at Iron Hill via Northam. In 1922 in Mundijong, he married Violet Evelyn Green (b1898 in Mundijong, WA). Sydney and Violet settled in Mundijong, where they raised their family and Sydney was a Contractor before moving to Perth in the late 1920s, where Sydney was a Fireman until retirement. Sydney died in 1987 and Violet in 1996.
