Frederick King was born and grew up in Sydney. He enlisted at Sydney on 17 December 1917 adnd, after sailing to the Near East, was taken on strength with the 6th Light Horse Regiment on 10 June 1918. He served with the unit for four months until he came down with malaria in October. He repatriated to Australia in early 1919.
